Dating back to the 14th century, Castello Romitorio's massive building is located on the highest hill in the northwest region of Montalcino. In 1984, the building was purchased by Sandro Chia, who brought Castello Romitorio to what we know today. The first Sangiovese vineyards revived that year were on the slopes of the hill. Ever since, Castello Romitorio is committed to studying, exposing and developing Brunello di Montalcino.
The wines of Castello Romitorio present Sangiovese in a distinctly lively and fruity way. This, along with barrel aging as a dominant component, create one of the most sought-after Brunellos in the region.
The Chia family also has plots in the Marma region, from which they produce their Morellino di Scansano - the great Ghiaccio Forte, as well as some very interesting Super Tuscan wines.
