The history of the Luigi Pira winery begins in 1950, with the settlement in Serralunga d'Alba and the planting of 30 acres of Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes. For years, the Pira family has been growing grapes and selling them to other producers. They later shifted to selling wines in bulk to négociants. The Pira family has vineyards in the Margheria, Marenca, and Rionda tracts. It wasn't until the early 90s, when the son Gianpaolo started working at the winery, that the family began to age wines in bottles in the house’s cellar and to sell the wine under the name Luigi Pira. The first Barolo was released in 1993. Today the winery is managed by Luigi's sons—Gianpaolo, in charge of the cellar and production area, and Romulo and Claudio, in charge of crops and agriculture
